The Lancers Football program worked hard on Labour Day Monday to defeat the York University Lions in Toronto.
On their first game of the 2009 OUA Football season, the Lancers saw a 17-14 win making their record 1-0 for the season.
Five minutes into Monday’s game, Lancer kicker and history major Joe Colella put his team up 3-0 after booting a 37 yard field goal.
Another five minutes after that, Windsor native receiver Mike Harrington grabbed a 26 yard pass from returning quarterback Sam Malian setting the score at 10-nothing, with Windsor going into the second quarter of the game.
Harrington caught a total of 4 passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.
Malian finished the game with 13 of 28 passes for a total of 134 yards including one touchdown and two interceptions.
The second quarter was taken back by the York Lions as they scored the only points.
Anthony Tombler of the Lions snatched a fumble and ran it down the field for a touchdown putting the score at 10-7 after the first half of game play.
The third quarter was uneventful, but Lancer linebacker John Celestino revived the Alumni Field crowd by intercepting a York pass and running an amazing 70 yards for the touchdown that put the Lancers up 17-7.
Late in the fourth quarter, York responded to Celestino’s touchdown with one of their own, narrowing the Lancers lead to 17-14, which, fortunately for Windsor, remained as the final score.
Lancer rookie running back Kamar Anglin rushed 65 yards in the game, while teammate Cody Buter rushed for 53 yards.
Both players had strong performances carrying the ball 10 times each.
The Lancers home opener is set to kick off on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m. on Alumni Field.
Admission is free for UWindsor students.
